How my diet has changed since being a mum 

Since being a mum, life feels like it’s going 1000 miles an hour. When Lacie was first born, my diet was so important. My milk needed to be as high quality as possible, so I was very strict about eating plenty of good protein, good fats and vegetables. Don’t get me wrong, I’m still strict about eating these good foods but my Sunday night food prep sessions are all about making Lacie the best food possible for the week ahead. Think sweet potato muffins, chicken and avocado wraps, banana, avocado, spinach and chia seed porridge and quinoa concoctions. It’s all about getting the right nutrients into Lacie so she’s happy, healthy and benefiting from stable blood sugar levels.

So how about me? I’m all for convenience. Protein bars or shakes tend to be my staple breakfast right now (which still ends up being 10:30ish no matter how organised I am!!) pre-cooked and marinated chicken with ready prepared salad bowls for lunch and some CO YO and Paleo Granola or chopped fruit for my afternoon pick me up. I always cook a dinner though, which I eat with Lacie. That tends to be some sort of protein dish with vegetables and salad. Last night for example was salmon with pesto and roasted vegetables. She’ll sit in the kitchen with me whilst I prepare it and we chat and sing. It’s one of my favourite times of day! It doesn’t take long to prepare but I let her try things like pepper sticks and cucumber slices as I chop. 

I do love the kitchen, and I do miss the kitchen. I have so many recipes (check this sugar-free banana bread out!!) stored on my phone that i would love to bake – but these will have to wait until I have a few hours to play around in the kitchen, which doesn’t happen that often. Right now, it’s all about building good habits for Lacie and giving her a taste of all the good foods out there whilst she doesn’t know any different. I’m hoping she’ll get a taste for these foods and they will be her go to foods for the rest of her life. We’ll see. I’m fully aware that there will be parties to go too, and day trips out with Nannies and Nannas!

As for me. I’ll carry on eating my meals with either one hand or really quickly (I’m always in demand!) It’s not forever and as long as I have the right fuel inside me to keep doing a good job as a mother then that’s a that matters. It makes me really appreciate food when I do go out for a nice meal or manage to cook something special. 

What do other mums do when it comes to eating around their little ones? I would love to know! I’m off to go and enjoy a chilli with some cauliflower rice.

Day 19 – 21 day fat loss challenge

I can honestly say that this 21 day challenge has been brilliant for keeping me on track.
I’ve kept to my calorie allowance nine days out of ten (well 16 out of 19), worked out or walked every day and am really noticing a difference with my physique.

My husband has also been away for three days and usually I would see it as an opportunity to eat whatever I wanted but I’ve been extremely focused and had a small piece of Lindor chocolate when wrapping some Xmas presents on Friday night (day 17).But that’s allowed right?!

Today, I’ve been out for a short and sharp run (4 miles in 30ish minutes) followed by a walk into town with Lacie. That’s my fasted cardio done!
I then had a three egg omelette with cheese and bacon as a late breakfast, followed by some Sukrin low carb bread for lunch with goats cheese and a pot of Morello Cherry CO YO.
For dinner I had a carrot, apple & lemon juice with a handful of spinach. I really fancied a juice, after Watching Jason Vale’s ‘Super Juice Me‘ documentary last night – I’ve been truly inspired by it. I’ve been on one of his retreats and have forgotten just how amazing you feel after having a juice!
I’m definitely going to have one every day and may even do a week long juice detox. We’ll see! I just hate making them and washing the juicer up!

Tomorrow I have a gym workout planned first thing and then I’ll probably take Lacie out for a walk in the afternoon. USA Pro sent me some of their amazing new workout clothes and I actually can’t wait to put them on in the morning and work out. It’s amazing how new gym clothing can be so motivating!

Day 3 of my 21 day diet challenge

Hello day three…it looks like it may be hungry one as I woke up hungry today!

Determined not to venture of track though, I popped Lacie in her running buggy (read my review on the Out ‘n’ About Nipper Sport V4 here) and went out for an hour run before breakfast. There’s a park about 10 minutes from our house, so I walked there as part of my warm up and the set my timer to three minutes running & 30 seconds rest. I did this 10 times before walking back home again. It took about an hour and according to my heart rate monitor I burnt 500 calories.

When I got home I had a Protein shake with 1/2 a banana followed by some sourdough bread with almond butter. That certainly knocked the hunger pangs on the head and the combination of protein, carbs & good fats helped my recovery too.

For lunch I had Tomato soup followed by a chicken breast with courgette noodles marinated in homemade pesto made from spinach, avocado, basil & pine nuts and then a apple mid afternoon and a sugar free lolly….it was either that or something extra naughty. I always struggle in the afternoons with cravings!

I always go to the gym on Thursday nights too, so as soon as Lacie was in bed I ventured to my local Virgin Active.
I always run there. It takes 8 minutes, which is perfect for my warm up.
I then did 20 glute raises and 20 deadbugs to switch on my core, followed by 20 Kettlebell lunges holding a 12kg Kettlebell to work my lower body. I did this five times, and not only were my legs burning but my heart rate was nice and high too. This is the strength phase of my workout.

To finish off, I did a nasty met-con finisher, where I did 150 Russian Kettlebell swings using a 12kg Kettlebell. I didn’t however just do 150 straight off. I did as many as I could in a minute, then did 10 jumping lunges and did another load of swings until my buzzer went off. Basically on the minute every minute I did my jumping lunges, then carried on doing my Kettlebell swings inbetween.
The whole thing took me 6 1/2 minutes – it was horrible. The first time I did this though it took me 11 minutes so I’m definitely getting fitter!

I then finished off with some tricep dips and side planks and walked home. I usually run but my legs refused!

When I got home I had a nice hot bath with my favourite Liquid Yoga bath soak followed by a pot of CO YO mixed with some lemon juice and lemon zest. It reminds me of lemon meringue pie…and is a perfect post without treat.

So, I’ve had another great day. I’ve eaten around 1500 calories again but burnt 500 during my run and 400 at the gym – leaving me well under my calorie allowance. I think I may be hungry again tomorrow so will plan a nice big breakfast. I’m thinking protein pancakes! Yum!

Slender Blend Super Smoothie

For the last two weeks I’ve been on a two-week detox. No sugar, no fruit, no grains. Just protein, vegetables and good fats like avocados and nuts. One thing I do find is that I’m always hungry in the afternoon so amongst the cups of herbal tea I’ve been having a Protein World Slender Blend Shake to tide me over until dinner.

I don’t add almond milk or coconut milk like they suggest but instead blend it with water and add a teaspoon of hazelnut butter (it reminds me of Dairy Milk), cinnamon (to help stabilise my blood sugar levels and regulate my appetite), maca powder (to help stabilise my hormones) and flax seeds, which are full of fibre and help flush out the excess oestrogen that is lingering on my hips and thighs.

The detox is definitely working in my favour. I’ve lost 3kg and although its been tough I’m soooo glad I’ve stuck it out. My muscle tone is back, I have so much more energy, I’m sleeping better and I’ve lost inches all over.
Once my two weeks is up, I’m going to allow myself a cheat meal on Saturday, and then get straight back on it on Sunday but not as strict. I will re-introduce berries as a snack, sweet potatoes with my main meal and perhaps some fruit with breakfast on the days I train – at the moment I’ve been having meat, vegetables and nuts for breakfast. Yes I know – it’s not that bad though honestly!!

I will stick to this religiously every week, with a cheat meal on Saturdays which will help boost my metabolism and simply keep me on track. If I know I can have a bit of what I fancy once a week then I can definitely stay on track.

My favourite Sugar Free Snack – 40 weeks pregnant and overdue!

I’m now 40 weeks pregnant and 2 days. I feel huge and using my days to get as organised as I can for the big day. I just wish I knew when it was.

To keep me occupied I’ve been trying loads of yummy recipes and cooking lots of sugar free treats. I don’t know about you but I really struggle mid-afternoon when I’m starting to feel tired and a bit bored.

To stop me walking down to Tesco and stocking up on rubbish, I’ve been making this tasty smoothie instead. It’s filing, sugar free and is full of goodness.

You will need;
1 scoop Vanilla Sunwarrior ‪‎Warrior Blend‬
– 200ml coconut water
– 100ml coconut milk from a can
– 200ml water
– 1tsp organic manuka honey
– 1/2 frozen banana
– 2  ice cubes
– sprinkle of cinnamon

To make I just simply pop everything into a blender, whizz for a few minutes and then serve in a chilled glass with a pretty straw.

I really do love it. It’s really creamy, filling and stops my sweet tooth while giving me a pick me up. I may even pop one in my hospital bag for some instant energy. It’s a nice idea – so I’ll make a note of it and if there is time before I’m whisked to the hospital I will do this. Something to look forward to, while providing me with some energy.

The Perfect Pregnancy Diet

Pregnancy is NOT the time to diet. It’s not the time to eat for three either. Eating for two is fine but your diet needs to be rich in whole foods rich in nutrients to create a healthy balanced plan to nourish you and your baby.

But what should you eat and how much? It’s easy to get it wrong, which is why I signed up for the Doll Curves Perfect Pregnancy Plan, especially as I hit my last trimester – the all important one, when my baby is growing bigger and getting ready to face the big wide world.

Founded by Celebrity Personal Trainers and Fitness Models, Sarah McLean and Lydia Rees, my Doll Curves plan gives me weekly nutrition advice to keep me healthy and well during my last trimester. It also reminds me that I only need to eat an extra 200 calories a day – the equivalent to a large banana!

Here is a round-up of what I’ve been eating over the last week and why it’s so good for me…

Breakfast

Banana Breakfast Smoothie
Blend ¼ gluten free oats, ½ cup of CO YO coconut yogurt, 1 banana, ½ cup Kara coconut milk, 2 teaspoons of honey, ¼ teaspoon ground cinnamon.
The benefits; Bananas are great at reducing fluid retention and swollen ankles – a common side effect in pregnancy. ‘They are also rich in potassium and the perfect energy booster,’ says Sarah.

Snack
120g Unsweetened Greek yogurt with blueberries
The benefits; Yogurt is full of ‘good bacteria’, which helps balance the good/bad bacteria within the body. ‘Yogurt is also rich in protein and calcium, which is good for you and baby’s growing bones,’ says Sarah.

Lunch
Annabel Karmel’s Chicken Pitta Pockets 
Chicken, ½ avocado and watercress pitta pockets with chopped tomatoes and a side salad.
The benefits; Avocados are loaded with folic acid, vital for forming your baby’s brain and nervous system, potassium, vitamin C, and vitamin B6, which can help your baby’s tissue and brain grow. Watercress can also help aid digestion, while the protein in chicken will help every cell in your baby’s body to grow and develop.

Snack
Hummus on organic unsalted rice cakes with chopped vegetables and 20g unsalted almonds, brazil nuts or walnuts.
The benefits; Raw vegetables will keep your immune system strong and the unsalted rice cakes with hummus are a great source of slow release carbohydrates and protein.

Dinner
50g wild rice with ½ cup streamed green vegetable and Annabel Karmel Salmon with tomato salsa
The benefits; ‘Wild rice is rich in fibre and has an excellent effect on the gut wall,’ says Sarah. News has it that women who eat oily fish, like salmon during pregnancy are also more likely to have brainy and sociable children. Just make sure you don’t have it more than twice a week.

My Pregnancy Diet

Since finding out I’m expecting, weight has gone on where I really didn’t want it too and I have craved foods that I really didn’t want to crave.

Admittedly, in the first three months I went with the flow. If I wanted some salad, thats what I had, and if I wanted a digestive biscuit I went with it. I was so relieved to be pregnant, I wanted to do everything I could to protect my baby, and that involved listening to my body and going with it.

Now I’m five months in, I want to take more care of what is going in.

Here is my diet;

Before the gym:  two boiled eggs
10am: Green juice – 1 x apple, 4 x sticks celery, handful of kale, 1 x lemon, 1/4 cucumber and sometimes 1/2 avocado. I will also have a slice of rye bread with almond butter.

1pm: Usually a soup or I have chicken with sweet potato and salad.

4pm: This is my problem time so I have something sweet like chocolate Sunwarrior Protein Shake and 1/2 banana with cinnamon. I might also have a few slices of goats cheese.

7pm: Protein like salmon, chicken, steak or cod with salad or veggies.

8:pm: Apple and cinnamon and almond butter.

Now I don’t know if this is the right diet for everyone but I seem to have loads of energy from this. I’m still putting on weight though, which I suppose is down to my growing baby and my hormones. My nails are strong though, my hair doesn’t stop growing and my iron levels are high and my blood pressure is on the low side of normal. My mid-wife seems happy.

Don’t get me wrong, sometimes I do give into my cravings. For instance, yesterday I was at an event and they were giving out yummy birthday cake with lots of icing. Usually I would have resisted but I think why not. Big shape up is for once the baby is born so that’s when I say no, no to cake and no to junk food but for now, I will have it occasionally as and when I fancy it.

What I eat for breakfast – my green goodness smoothie

Yesterday I went and saw my mid-wife she asked me how my diet was looking and seemed pretty impressed with my breakfast (and other meals for that matter). My juice is mainly bright green and full of vitamins, minerals and good fats. She definitely approved!

One juice I have most mornings is my turbo green juice.

It’s basically 1 x apple, a handful of kale, an inch of ginger, some cucumber, 3 stalks of celery and a lime or lemon.

I then blend it with some ice cues, a cup of water, a tablespoon of Lucy Bees’ coconut oil and a scoop of Bodyism’s Beauty Food.

I love adding coconut oil to my breakfast as it helps fill me up for longer and contains large amounts of lauric acid, a powerful anti-microbial fatty acid that protects the immune system of my growing baby. Coconut oil is also said to to increase the quality of the womb environment and breast milk – both things that are absolutely vital to me right at 19 weeks pregnant.

If I’m being extra indulgent and want to make my juice nice and creamy I will also add 1/2 an avocado or a dollop of CO YO, a dairy-free yogurt made with real coconut milk. It’s a real treat!

It’s weird. These days I wouldn’t even think about having cereal or toast. I wake up in the morning craving the goodness of this juice. It sets me up nicely for the day and the benefits of it are evident. My irons levels are super high, I don’t suffer with lack of energy or constipation like many pregnant women at this stage in their pregnancy and I’m getting plenty of green, vitamin rich food even though i don’t fancy eating it as a meal. I’ve really gone of meat and veggies since finding out I’m pregnant and this is a great way of filling up on my greens without gagging 🙂

As explained in an earlier post, one of my first stops for aiding my recovery was KX Gym in London.

Gideon, my personal trainer prescribed me all sorts of pills and potions including the KX 365 supplements, which features a multivitamin and CoQ10 for the morning and  an Omega-3 fish oil and Antoxidant tablet for the evening.

But what does what? The CoQ10 is crucial for helping the body to generate energy. So this was perfect for helping me to maintaining my energy levels. The multi-vitamin then meant that I got all my B vitamins for energy too as well as vitamin’s D and C to support my immune system.

The afternoon supplements, which were Omega-3 fish oils and an antioxidant, meant I got  660mg of EPA and DHA, essential fats – which help to support the heart and joints, whilst promoting muscle development, brain health and regulating hormones, whilst the antioxidant was perfect for helping me to cope with all the harmful effects of free radicals – those nasty things that cause the ageing process and disease.

So there you have it. One month works out at £85 but this is literally all you need supplement wise for the month and makes supplement taking and remembering sooooooo easy!
